Definition 1

A Contract is a written or oral (or partly written and partly oral) promise exchanged of another promise or for a performance that the law will enforce.

Definition 2

Contract are agreements that are accepted by the law as being capable and worthy of legal recognition. This means that the law has to acknowledge that the particular promise or promises that are involved, in the context in which they are made or given, should be effectuated in law.  An important factor in this respect is the necessity for the parties to intend to create legal relations.  (p. 8).
